John Adams wrote this to his wife, Abigail—
"The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty."
Well, that was a little special to me, since my mother was due to have me on July 4, 1940. I came early. I was born on July 2. John Adams was ingenious in so many ways! "Solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty." Hmmm! He had the intestinal fortitude (courage and perseverance) to invoke the name of God Almighty. My kind of guy!
INDEPENDENCE DAY! We should more often refer to this special holiday as such. Somehow Fourth of July just doesn't take it out far enough. What a great country, ours! With all its ills and woes, we are still the greatest on planet earth! But we come short of celebrating all that is truly ours, because we've gone all bonkers about political correctness. We've accepted the wrong kinds of change as being part of who we are. We've gone off the deep end on protecting social issues that are in diabolical opposition to those the Framers and Founding Fathers hoped would remain. (Don't forget one Nation under God, under God being the operative phrase!) God Almighty will never move and direct us in opposition to his Word.
I don't have to spell it out for you. Most, but not all, of my friends are Conservative, Christian, leaning way toward the Right, Bible-believing Americans. That doesn't make the centrists or left-wingers any less American. It might mean they have trouble sleeping at night, trouble trying to sort it all out, trying to come to grips with how we of the Conservative Christian persuasion seem to have the corner on peace of mind. I would like to help you with that. But you could actually do it for yourself simply by reading the Constitution and the Amendments, but you will need a Bible beside you so you can refer and understand Who and What the Framers were talking about when they were doing that work 235 years ago. Do that first, and then celebrate. Celebrate that the Strong Arm of Tyranny is being defeated as we move and have our being. That Oppression is being Crushed as symbolized by Lady Liberty's foot. We are strong and we are enduring.
We have lots of heroes out there. Family members, friends. Everyone of us has been affected by War one way or another, the greatest being the loss of loved ones.
Thank you from the depths to the men and women in uniform right now, serving all over the world while we work, play, eat, and sleep. Somewhere a serviceman or woman stands watch over us. Among those all uniformed up, trained, and armed is my grandson, Sgt. Mark Adam Jellison.Thank you, Adam, for your love of country and for standing vigil with all the other Patriots over this great country of ours.
At the proper time, we will welcome all our heroes home.
It will come.
We will wait.
We will pray.
And finally, we will rejoice.
God Bless America.
